Join us on the Third Month of the Month for the FRB Book Club. Members and Non-members will gather at a member's home to discuss a preselected Book of the Month, enjoy some refreshments, and socialize. However, you don't have to read the book to attend - come and socialize with us. Check below for the selections and monthly host. If you have any questions or if you want to be added to the monthly email announcements, please email us at bookclub@frontrangebears.org
Our May meeting will be held on Monday, May 21 at 1029 E. 8th Ave., Denver, 80218 - the meeting room on the 15th floor at Bob and Robert's condo at Park Place Tower. We will gather around 6:30 for socializing with the meeting to follow at 7. The focus of our discussion will be The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt. "Stephen Greenblatt's The Swerve, which won this year's National Book Award for nonfiction, unearths the riveting story of an Italian book hunter named Poggio Bracciolini, who, one fateful day in 1417, stumbled across what was then the only known surviving copy of the Roman poet Lucretius's On the Nature of Things. It was a discovery, Greenblatt says, that would kick-start the Renaissance and usher in all manner of thought that we consider 'modern.'" Everyone I have spoken to who has read this book says they really enjoyed it. Remember, you can attend even if you don't get a chance to read or finish the book. Light refreshments will be served and as always there will be enjoyable socializing. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please email me at bookclub@frontrangebears.org. The door code and phone number to call if there are any problems will be sent the week before the meeting. So join us for the May meeting!

Reviews of previous month's meetings:
Apr - On April 16 we gathered at John Jaruzel's home for our April meeting. It was a lovely sunny evening, and we were able to enjoy John's garden before the meeting. We had a pleasant discussion of A Boy's Own Story by Edmund White and enjoyed socializing with our fellow bears and readers. John had a birthday cake to celebrate Michael Kessler's birthday too! Everyone had a good time at the meeting.
Mar - "Born Round" by Frank Bruni. Host: Geoff Orr. Book club members gathered at Cinzzetti's to share a meal and a discussion of Born Round. This was only the second time that the club met at a restaurant. The food was delicious but the discussion was a little hindered by the one long table that we shared. It took some planning on the part of Geoff Orr (Pyro) for the club to meet at the restaurant but overall everyone had a great time visiting with those near them at the table.
Feb - " The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. Host: Wayne Sutton. On Monday, February 20, members of the FRB Book Club gathered to celebrate seven years of reading. Below you will find several photos from the evening. The "covered dish" meal was delicious with members bringing a variety of dishes for all to enjoy. Thank you to all who contributed to the meal. It was a wonderful celebration and everyone enjoyed socializing and the company of fellow bears. Our discussion of Wayne Sutton's selection for the month, The Help, was interesting and enlightening as several members shared personal experiences. Everyone agreed that the book was better than the best picture nominated movie. Thank you Wayne for bringing the book to the group. The evening was relaxed and enjoyed by all in attendance.
Jan - "Speaking Ill of the Dead - Jerks in Colorado History" by Phyllis Perry. Host: George Peak. We had a great meeting on January 16 with 13 book club members attending (see the photo below). A big thank you to our hosts Brent Berry, the club room was perfect, and George Peak. Even with the snow falling outside, we had a great group who didn't let the weather deter them from the meeting. George provided interesting appetizers from the Buckhorn Exchange including Colorado mountain oysters, buffalo sausage and stuffed artichokes. These were perfect complements to the book selection - Jerks in Colorado History by Phyllis J. Perry. We had a good discussion as to if everyone in the book was a true jerk or not but couldn't decide who was the biggest jerk of them all! Plus we came up with some other jerks that we would add to the list! LOL It was an enjoyable evening and as always it was great visiting with fellow bears
